Troubleshooting

Paper comes out but stays blank
The thermal paper is loaded the wrong way round — only one side can be printed. Load the paper so that the heat-sensitive side faces the print head (usually the outside of the roll).

Test: quickly run the tip of your fingernail over the paper with some pressure — the heat-sensitive side turns black from the friction heat.
Print faint, streaky or patchy
1) Clean the printhead.
2) Only use dry paper — damp paper prints faintly.
3) Use only specified thermal paper (specification TI-DE-0606).
Printer prints only a few dots | characters — or stops
The cause is almost always the power supply: thermal printers draw high peak currents while printing. Size the power supply adequately, use short supply lines with sufficient cross-section, and check the connectors for contact resistance.

Typical accompanying symptoms: the status LED goes out when printing starts; paper feed works, but the self-test does not.
USB: printout stops or keeps repeating
Check the COM port setting: set up the virtual COM port according to the installation instructions. In addition, disable the "end of job" action in the Windows driver.
Serial: printout incomplete after a few characters
The printer buffer is overrun because the transmitter does not observe a handshake. Enable handshake: Software Xon/Xoff or hardware CTS. Reduce transmission speed if necessary.
Serial: printer prints wrong | garbled characters
The transmission is disturbed. Use the correct interface levels (RS232 vs. TTL). The transmission cable may be too long.
Serial: sporadically corrupted data
With a poor ground connection, print current flows through the interface cable (potential rise → data corruption). Check and improve the ground connections; supply power via short, thick cables.
